Last month, we reported that accomplished actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was offered a role in the highly anticipated sequel to ‘The Hunger Games’. Today, Comic Book Movie got word that the Oscar winner is officially joining the cast of ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’.

Hoffman has had a number of memorable roles in movies such as ‘Almost Famous’, ‘Capote’, ‘The Big Lebowski’, and ‘Pirate Radio’, and as of now, he can add the role of Plutarch Heavensbee, the new Gamemaker that replaces Seneca Crane after the events of the first movie, to the list. Apparently, the deal to bring the actor to Panem was struck just before the 4th of July holiday, and before Lionsgate could make an official announcement, the news leaked.

Since production starts in the fall, Hoffman is one of many that will fill roles in ‘Catching Fire’, including Jena Malone, who will play Johanna Mason, and former WWE and WCW champion Kevin Nash, who is in line for an unspecified role, as well as returning cast members Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, and so on. Currently, the search for fan favorite Finnick Odair is still ongoing.

For those unfamiliar with what’s to come, here’s a synopsis of what’s to come in the next installment of ‘The Hunger Games’ saga:

Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has won the annual Hunger Games with fellow district tribute Peeta Mellark. But it was a victory won by defiance of the Capitol and their harsh rules. Katniss and Peeta should be happy. After all, they have just won for themselves and their families a life of safety and plenty. But there are rumors of rebellion among the subjects, and Katniss and Peeta, to their horror, are the faces of that rebellion. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge.

‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire’, helmed by ‘I Am Legend’ director Francis Lawrence, is scheduled for release on November 22, 2013.
