WARNING! POSSIBLE SPOILERS!

There seems to be a lot of fans who have been trying to figure out what the sinister weapon was that Bane used to cause that rift and destruction at the Gotham stadium. Now in a newly released image from the film, Wayne Enterprises reveals the answer.

Earlier we posted the handwritten letters between Lucius Fox and Bruce Wayne alluding to a project that the Wayne Enterprises R&D department was developing for clean energy. Wayne ordered the project shut down as “there is too much at stake and the risk is too great.” Now we know that it involved a nuclear fusion reactor.

Considering that a Dr. Pavel,  a Russian scientist who specializes in nuclear power and weaponry, is involved as well as a mention of a CIA and militia involvement and something about a $3 million payment, it sure looks like we’re getting close to some of the movie’s plot.

The image released below coincides with the one that has been circulating around the web since the device was shown in the second trailer for the movie:

Here’s some information about fusion reactors according to How Stuff Works:

Fusion reactors have been getting a lot of press recently because they offer some major advantages over other power sources. They will use abundant sources of fuel, they will not leak radiation above normal background levels and they will produce less radioactive waste than current fission reactors.

Nobody has put the technology into practice yet, but working reactors aren’t actually that far off. Fusion reactors are now in experimental stages at several laboratories in the United States and around the world.

So it looks like we’re one step closer in unveiling Bane’s ultimate plan and a little of what Batman may be up against. So what do you think of everything so far?

Directed by Christopher Nolan, ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ stars Christian Bale, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Marion Cotillard, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, and Michael Caine and opens on July 20th.
