Casting for ‘Robocop’ is at full speed as another thespian is in negotiations to join the film. Abbie Cornish is said to have been offered a role opposite Joel Kinnaman.
Cornish has appeared in the sci-fi films ‘Limitless’ and ‘Sucker Punch’ and was recently seen in last year’s Oscar nominated film ‘W.E.’ which was co-written and directed by Madonna. She was in the running for major parts in ‘Prometheus’, ‘The Great Gatsby’ and ‘The Invisible Woman’ but was beaten out for each of them. But as the saying goes, when a door closes another one opens and it looks like she may be playing the wife to Kinnaman’s Alex Murphy, the mangled law enforcement officer turned cybernetic crime fighter.
If negotiations go well, Cornish will also be joining Gary Oldman as the scientist, Norton, who creates Robocop and “finds himself torn between the ideals of the machine trying to rediscover its humanity and the callous needs of a corporation” and Samuel L. Jackson who will play Pat Novak, a charismatic media mogul who is a powerful force in the Robocop world.”
This is certainly turning out to be a fascinating cast. Jose Padilha has said his version of ‘Robocop’ will occur between the time Murphy is gunned down and the time we see him as the kick butt Robocop in the 1987 version with Peter Weller. With a script written by Nick Schenk (‘Gran Torino’), this reboot does have me intrigued. Now all we need is to find out who will play Officer Annie Lewis!
Filming should be starting in the next few months as it has a release date of August 9, 2013.
