They’ve boldly gone where no man has ever gone before and now they’ll be visiting your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man as Sony has announced that they have hired Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman to re-work the screenplay for the sequel to ‘The Amazing Spider-Man.’
The first draft of the sequel’s screenplay was originally written by James Vanderbilt (‘Total Recall’, ‘Robocop’) who also wrote the upcoming original reboot. While it’s not uncommon for studios to bring in other screenwriters to work on a script, the hiring of two big heavy hitters in the movie writing world does show that Sony means business when it comes to the Spider-Man franchise.
Orci and Kutzman is no stranger to huge blockbuster movies as not only have they written the J.J. Abrams’ ‘Star Trek’ reboot, but also its sequel, ‘Star Trek 2’, ‘Mission Impossible III’, and ‘Transformers.’ In a joint statement, the writing duo expressed how excited there are to be part of the franchise:
“We grew up as huge ‘Spider-Man’ fans so, to us, the opportunity to work on this film is akin to being handed the Holy Grail. We love the direction Sony and the filmmakers are taking the Peter Parker/Spider-Man mythology.”
Producer Avi Arad added, “It’s a thrill to have Alex and Bob put their stamp on this franchise that we all love so well. They have an innate understanding of what makes Peter Parker not just a superhero but a hero for all of us.”
Also excited about the two writers being on board is producer Matt Tolmach, “Alex and Bob have a unique ability to write great characters and spectacular action that makes them pitch perfect for ‘Spider-Man.’ They have an exciting take on the franchise.”
The sequel to ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ already has a release date of May 2, 2014 so filming will have to occur pretty quickly in order to make that deadline. In addition to reworking the script, Orci and Kurtzman will also serve as executive producers on the film.
I’m actually pretty excited with this news as Orci and Kurtzman are a pretty impressive duo and can only elevate the level of action and excitement for the sequel. Even though ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ won’t be out until July, I’m already looking forward to the sequel! How about you?
