‘Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’ Disassembling?

Posted Wednesday, April 18th, 2012 04:00 pm GMT -4 by 0

Lately, we’ve been getting some awesome news regarding the Avengers, but this is at the complete other end of the spectrum: a complete and total bummer. At this point, treat this as a rumor, but a rumor with some compelling evidence.

According to Comic Book Movie, Jeph Loeb, the head of Marvel Animation Studios, has cancelled ‘Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’ in favor of a new Avengers cartoon that will be produced by MAS and set in the ‘Ultimate Spider-Man’ universe. The new show will begin airing in the fall of 2013 and will consist of self-contained, standalone episodes as opposed to story arcs, which Loeb has openly said that he is opposed to.

CBM has a few quotes from Loeb regarding the show. When Superhero Tooniverse asked if EMH was finished with no third season in production, Loeb said:

“I can only tell you that we’re committed to The Avengers universe and that’s as far as I can go.”

In another interview with Toonzone, who mentioned that the show is animated by another studio and has been in development since before the Disney acquisition of Marvel, Loeb simply stated:

JEPH LOEB: We have big plans for The Avengers.

TOONZONE NEWS: So do you think the show will get a third season?

JEPH LOEB: I can just tell you we have big plans for The Avengers and that’s all I can tell you right now.

In regards to the standalone episodes issue, Loeb had this to say to Collider when promoting ‘Ultimate Spider-Man’:

“That’s certainly something that we’re talking about. Earth’s Mightiest Heroes has a tremendous following. One of the things that’s very unique about that show is that it was at a time prior to my coming in. It is a very serialized show, and there are a lot of characters. What we wanted to do with Spider-Man, and going forward, was to tell stories that are individualized. Obviously, we want everybody to watch the show every week, but we also know that people’s time is often taken. So, DVR the show, but if you’re not going to do that, the idea is that you will be able to catch up. I don’t ever want anybody to sit down on Sunday mornings at 11 o’clock and suddenly feel like, ‘Well, I lost the last three episodes, so I don’t really know what’s going on.’ The only thing that is a two-parter is the pilot, which will actually be shown in its entirety on Sunday, April 1st.”

The second half of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’ second season will contain standalone episodes because Loeb and MAS took over production after the first 13 episodes were made.

This unfortunate news comes as the second season of the show recently kicked off on April 1st. Avengers fans of all ages, myself included, have received the show extremely positively, making it the most successful series on Disney XD. In fact, it’s been a sort of return to form for Marvel Animation, whose shows haven’t exactly been super stellar after the 90s, aside from a few gems here and there.

Don’t expect an official announcement concerning the fate of ‘Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’ to come out any time soon since the studio doesn’t want ratings to drop. However, in my experience with well-loved shows like ‘Community’ or ‘Firefly’, when fans hear that their show is in jeopardy of being cancelled, they’ll tune in more often to try and save it.

What do you think about the disassembling of ‘Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’? Are you in favor of wiping the animated Avengers slate clean and restarting it in the ‘Ultimate Spider-Man’ universe? Or do you think that Jeph Loeb is off his rocker? Let us know in the comments!

Jeph Loeb has become a plague on comics and their fans, one which is now spreading into other mediums.

First Spectacular Spider-Man now this? Wow.. the only good Marvel cartoons in years (except Wolverine and the X-Men) oh well.. I won;t be watching these crappy Ultimate versions. Ultimate Spider-Man is awful.

  • AdamR

Jeph Loeb should die a thousand deaths of this is true

  • LaraL

As a recent fan of EMH, this breaks my heart.  It feels like good cartoons nowadays are purposefully killed off for stupid reasons. I really hope that these rumors aren’t true.

i hope they not gonna cancel season 2 of EMH.

  • Beetheb

I think if it’s true it’s a typical Jeph Loeb decision: bad. Serialized fiction is much deeper, more nuanced, epic and just better in every way. He wants “stand alone” stories because they work better when the show goes into syndication.

Get Loeb away from any crucial decision involving Marvel properties, stat.

  • Stetson Cooper

Darn it! I just got into this show yesterday.

  • JohnCuriel

    No! Don’t cancel the show!

  • CBell

Ultimate Spider-Man is the WORST Spider-Man cartoon EVER!  Spidey was NEVER as childish and silly as he is in this series!  Working with his new SHIELD brat pack is an extremely bad idea.  ”The Spectacular Spider-Man” was better!  It remained true to Spidey’s character, including regular villans.  DO NOT CANCEL MARVEL’S BEST ANIMATED FEATURE TO INCORPORATE IT WITH THIS RIDICULOUS FACSIMILE OF A LEGENDARY HERO!!!!!!  BAD IDEA MARVEL!  IF IT AIN’T BROKE, DON’T FIX IT!

  • Thedreadirish

I can’t believe they would even think of canning the show!! They must be crazy!! Where can I send an angry letter?!

  • Geoff Beilby

The ‘Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’, is the great piece of work I have ever seen.  Please do not touch it or mees with it.

No body wants that stand alone stuff anymore.

Please Mr  Loeb, do not mess with the current format.

  • Spideydominates

He is off his rocker.  Please keep A:EMH intact. It is a superb show.  Standalone can work with arc, but abandoning arc so people aren’t lost is moronic

  • DragonKnight

Once again, if true, this shows just how much Network execs do not understand (and how little they care about) their sci-fi fanbase.  While they dis and think that a highly-serialized series is too complicated for their fan-based, they favor the stereo-typical storyline of the 20 minute format, not realizing that having a searlized series should do more for the DVD sales than anything else, as fans buy the set looking for clues that they might of missed and any easter eggs that might be present.

At least this is the Cartoon network and we won’t have to worry about lame reality programming the which that has taken over a certain syphi network..

  • Demoncat4

if indeed avengers will be no more it is  sad for liked the show. espically when the movie is coming out and could be used to pick up new fans  of the avengers. not to mention the show ending before the vision and scarlet witch show up is sad. though will not believe it till marvel officaly once and for all says so.

  • Rorschach2099

I don’t much care for what I’ve seen of EMH, but there are definitely things I like about it.  And I’d much rather have a serialized show, telling an actual story, than a “super-hero power hour” kind of thing.  That being said, it worked for Batman:  The Brave and the Bold…

But replacing the magnificent Spectacular Spider-Man with the soulless Ultimate Spider-Man is one of the greatest travesties in modern animation.  Setting something else in the same bland, trope-ridden universe doesn’t excite me.  And Jeff “Ultimatum” Loeb has lost almost all his credibility with me as a storyteller after some of the stinkers he’s produced.

    This is most unwelcome news.

    • Tmj13

Jeph Loeb needs to seriously think about stepping down, before he drives anymore fans away from Marvels animated projects! Why bother watching if its not going to have a story! Those are the shows that keep you intrigued. He obviously has no imagination and definately wasnt a comic book fan!! Why do you think comics were and still are so popular, ITS BECAUSE OF THE STORY ARCS!!! Not to mention Avengers EMH looks like its leading into the Civil War story arc, and I’ve been waiting for them to do something with this for so long!!! Just like the screwed up Wolverine and the X-men right when its going to go into the Age of Apocolips!!! They need to clean house at Marvels animated studios because no one seems to be paying attention to the people that count. THE FANS!!!!!

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/UHVOJKL2BELS6XGQJEM2RAME64 Lemmon

disney strikes again first it was wolverine and the x men, then spectacular spiderman now this. why even start a show if it’s going to get canned once we get into it?

    • Tmj13

Well if this happens I’m done watching anymore of Marvels animated shows. Everytime they have something good, one of these idiotic execs comes along and ruins it!! First Wolverine and the X-men and now this! Everytime the start getting to the really good parts of the storylines they decide for whatever stupid reason to cancel the show and go in another direction!! I am a big Marvel fan since I was a little kid, but they are just ruining the expierience for me and my son!

  • GaryRJr

Marvel would be making the Biggest Mistake Yet if they were to cancel this series!  WHY does Marvel keep doing this?!?  First, The Spectacular Spider-Man gets canceled after 2 Amazing seasons!  They were able to blend the stories from 40+ years of comics so smoothly and made the characters seem so fresh and new.  The last episode had me going CRAZY because I wasn’t 100% sure Who the Goblin was, thou I Should have known.  Introducing characters first Out Of Costume before bringing them in as their more popular characters is love to the fans of the comics who Know and Care about these characters!  Starting off the Avengers with the Original 5 and introducing stories from The Kang Dynasty to The Ultron Imperative to Secret Invasion, it’s been Fun watching this show with my nephew and telling him about some of the books the stories are based on.  The Justice League cartoon did so well back in the because they practically made ALL of the stories 2 or 3 part stories so us fans would Have to tune in next episode!  If ONLY marvel would LISTEN TO THEIR FANS when it comes to their Animation department, because it’s not just children watching these programs.  All of their cartoons Don’t Have To Be Connected In The Same Universe!!! I’ve Always said “Make Mine Marvel” for over 15+ years now, but if they cancel This series as well, I may just start questioning that statement…

  • NotAFanOfThisStyle

lol well i like cartoons as much as the next guy but yall cant be serious, the style of it is a joke , im for a newer avengers im hoping it will be a transformation in style like the way teen titans was to the now young justice , which is bad@ss. in short yay cancel this one and woot bring a better animated one please

  • Keefncookies

I will never ever support Marvel Animation if this is true, though the comics arent doing much better with retards like Loeb and Bendis running things. I will redefine the meaning of hate if they cancel this show…

  • Keefncookies

P.S. Overreaching arcs is one of the biggest delights in this show for me!! Even if they keep the show and stick to only standalone episodes, I’m done believing in Marvel Animation.

  • Krow12566

This why DC animation will always be better than Marvel. Boneheads like Loeb, who are so egocentric that they careless about the Fans. Disney should turn over marvel animation to Pixar and let the fun begin.

  • Gmthomas05

The greatest achievement in the history of Marvel animation, and of course, Disney wants to dumb it down to product placement.

  • indyX

Loeb does realize the Internet allows people to watch episodes they missed right? Is he really that dumb?

  • lemonline2

The current show is awesome (except for the hideous Wasp outfit), but Loeb’s involvement has me very weary. I don’t want a dumbed down Avengers animated show — and I really prefer the format of the current animated show to the Ultimate Spider-Man series.

  • Guest

The show is great the way it is.  HUGE mistake to do some kind of relaunch.

  • Jvc

I am still getting over the young justice toy line getting the axe. Now EHM might disassemble by the fall? Please tell these guys are high. I try to keep an open mind about ultimate spiderman but it pales in comparison to EHM. And if ultimate avengers is going to be anything like ultimate spiderman, we have to protest HARD to save EHM. Dear lord, please don’t let this great animated series end so soon.

THis my fav cartoon out right now smh

  • Nugo520

i really really really hope that thay don’t cancil the show because it is extramly well made and one of the best shows on tv and i am basing this purly on what i’ve seen from the first season as the second has yet to air in my country (which i hope will change in the not to distant future) i like the avengers because it takes parts from both the classic and the ultimate universe which has been done in a very well dome way, i have never really liked the ultimate universe on its own and if the new show takes part souly in that universe i’ll not be interested. As for the epasodes being stand alone that is out right obsured i enjoy the story arcs because it reminds me of the comics and i’ve never missed an episode of the show and thought “oh no i’ve missed some episodes i’ll never be able to keep track.” and the story arcs are what keep you watching if the shows are stand alone there is no way thay will have the same draw to keep watching them. So to sum up aformentioned rant, thay should keep EMH going and not invest in the new avrngers show just so thay can tie in ultimate spider-man (which i have no comment on as that is yet to air in my country also)

P.S. if any one has any info on when either EMH or ultimate spider-man will air in the uk please let me know

  • Navi1069

If they r going to cancel da show, they better bring on to da table someth
    ing extremely amazing…

  • Darcy_kehler

Nooooooooo don’t cancel EMH my son will be heartbroken he loves this show don’t restart it in spider man keep them separate guaranteed people will enjoy them both or do what they did in the old spiderman show have them make random guest appearances like the x men in old spiderman and the fantastic four in EMH please don’t cancel this show has such a great storyline being created it’s awesome

  • Guest

if they cancel this show in favor of an ultimate spider-man show, i will never watch another animated marvel show ever again. this show is way to awesome to cancel, and whats with this single episode stuff? thats just wrong. this series is perfect the way it is (except that thor has been mostly absent for the second season), and any alterations to it would be (and those stand alone episodes are) extremely stupid and completely unnecessary. doing anything to this show to take it away from what it is would be a very poor decision from the directors

  • Totalcontrol871

This is EZ to figure out. Marvel saw how well the total over haul worked for Young Justice & now they want to do the same while the faux success of the movie is still….”hot”. That’s right, I said faux. I’m still not convinced Avenger really did as well as they claim. The merch just sits there….

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Zxmap-Zzmrp/100002340942555 Zxmap Zzmrp

The government probably censored season 3 because “civil war” was coming up where  S.H.E.L.D  tries to force the Avengers to register with an I.D card and the Avengers refuse and fight for their freedom.   Just a hunch..
