Melissa Joan Hart as Sabrina the Teenage Witch

Sabrina the Teenage Witch, the classic Archie Comics character, has been given the movie treatment before. The last, and most popular, incarnation of Sabrina was the television series starring Melissa Joan Hart as the title character of Sabrina Spellman.

Now Sony Pictures is gearing up to bring Sabrina back and this time it’s no made-for-TV movie… it’s a feature film! However, in an odd twist, Sony has announced that the new movie, from screenwriters Andrew Barrer and Gabriel Ferrari, will feature Sabrina as a young girl learning to use her newfound powers.

Say what!? Yes. You heard that right. Instead of having the fun character that we’ve seen in every other incarnation of The Teenage Witch, Sony is going a darker superhero-style route and making the new movie an origin tale along the lines of Spider-Man. According to Deadline they even went so far as to call the new Sabrina “edgier”.

I’m not sure how edgy Sabrina the Teenage Witch needs to get. If I go see a movie based on an Archie Comics character, I don’t expect (or want) to see a movie that’s ‘X-Men’ meets ‘The Craft’. Of course, Sony did state that they’re keeping Sabrina’s talking cat Salem in the mix, so it may not be as dark as these first reports are stating.
