We had reported back in December that Oscar nominated documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock had taken his camera to a mecca where each year thousands flock to get their fix in the genre they love. The man who only ate McDonald’s food for a month in his documentary ‘Super Size Me,’ and who made a movie about product placement that was paid entirely through product placements from various brands within the movie called ‘The Greatest Story Ever Sold,’ has set his sights (and camera) towards the cultural phenomenon called Comic-Con.

Unlike his other documentaries, Spurlock doesn’t appear in this film but does provide Kevin Smith to be the “voice” of the movie. ‘Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan’s Hope’ takes a look at the San Diego Comic-Con event through the eyes of several people. In the trailer, they introduced the aspiring artist who hopes to meet publishers and start a career in comics, a collector and a designer, all who express their dreams as to what they hope to accomplish at Comic-Con.

Filmed at the 2010 con, the trailer mentions that this is the first time in 25 years that convention planners have allowed cameras inside the hub of all geekdom. If you attended Comic-Con that year, keep an eye out on the crowd as you just might see yourself!

The film is said to be a collaboration with Stan Lee and Joss Whedon and in the video provided by Spurlock introducing the trailer for his documentary, he explains how the three all came together to produce this film.

Here’s the official synopsis for the documentary:

Have you ever imagined a place where Vulcans and vampires get along? Where wizards and wookies can be themselves? Welcome to Comic-Con San Diego. What started as a fringe comic book convention for 500 fans has grown into the pop culture event of the year that influences every form of entertainment, now attended by over 140,000 strong. COMIC-CON EPISODE IV: A FAN’S HOPE- a film by Morgan Spurlock explores this amazing cultural phenomenon by following the lives of five attendees as they descend upon the ultimate geek mecca at San Diego Comic-Con 2010.

And we have that intro video followed by the trailer itself below.  As I have never been to Comic-Con (it is on my bucket list), it was a great quick look at what to expect when one goes there.

‘Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan’s Hope’ will be released in theaters April 6th.
