It’s a bit late in the filming to be adding cast members, but Zack Snyder’s ‘Man of Steel’ did just that. The Superman film just cast Richard Schiff (‘The West Wing’) in the role of Dr. Emil Hamilton.

While not the most well known character to those outside of the comic book community, Dr. Hamilton has made numerous appearances in Superman’s legacy in television as well. He has appeared as far back as ‘The Adventures of Lois and Clark’. Most notably, Dr. Hamilton was as a recurring character on ‘Superman: The Animated Series’ and ‘Justice League’ where he was voiced by Victor Brandt and Robert Foxworth respectively. More recently, a young version of Dr. Hamilton, played by Alessandro Juliani, appeared on ‘Smallville’.

Dr. Hamilton is best known for being Superman’s mentor. The doc works for the top secret science facility known as S.T.A.R. Labs where he studied alien technology. More recently in the comics, Dr. Hamilton turned into the villain Ruin after deciding that Superman was a danger to Earth. There’s no word yet on which side of the law Hamilton will be on in ‘Man of Steel’, but based on the late casting, I’d expect it’s only a cameo with him working at S.T.A.R. Labs.

‘Man of Steel’, directed by Zack Snyder is set to release on June 14, 2013 and stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Kevin Costner, Michael Shannon, and Laurence Fishburne.
