This may not come to a surprise to many, but Disney has announced today that ‘The Avengers’ will be released in both 2D and 3D come May 4th. What is a surprise is that during the whole filming process, no 3D cameras were used so that means the movie will have to undergo the post-conversion process to make it 3D.

This news has fans already groaning with dismay. After all, if the movie is going to be shown in 3D, doesn’t it make sense to film it with 3D cameras? Most post-conversion processes offer little in 3D effects and seem to be a way for the studios to make more money on a gimmick. (‘Clash of the Titans’ anyone?) Not saying that all post-conversion 3D movies are not worth the money as the process seemed to work with ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows, Part 2.’

Director Joss Whedon has heard the concerns and in an exclusive with Joblo, has said that he always knew that the movie would be released in 3D this way and was 100% behind the idea. While filming, he thought about the format “every second”:

“… there definitely are movies that shouldn’t be in 3D. ‘The Avengers’ isn’t obnoxiously 3D. There’s no, ‘Oh look,  we’re going to spend 20 minutes going through this tunnel because it’s in 3D!’ And no one is pointing at the screen the entire time. But it’s an action movie. Things tend to hurtle toward the screen anyway… Yeah, it’s fun!…I’m not a big fan of extreme long lens, talky movies – I like to see the space I’m in and relate to it, so 3D kinda fits my aesthetic anyway. And the technology has advanced so far in the past couple years.”

What are your thoughts of ‘The Avengers’ in 3D? Are you going to spend the extra money for a post-conversion or see the movie the way it was shot?
