Hop in the DeLorean and fire up the flux capacitor ‘cos we’re going ‘Back to the Future’! No, this is not an announcement of another beloved 80’s film that is going to be remade (although I wouldn’t be surprised). It is an announcement that Nike has put up 1,500 pairs of the Nike Mag (the shoes Marty McFly wears in the movie) to be auctioned off on Ebay.

It was over 20 years ago when we first saw these shoes on Marty McFly when he visited the year 2015. The 2011 Nike Mags are an exact replica of the sneakers from the movie ‘Back to the Future II.’ The sneakers are made out of space age materials and have an electroluminescent outsole that includes glowing lights with a glowing “Nike” on the strap. Unfortunately, the shoes will not power lace themselves. (According to the fine print on eBay, you’ll have to wait until 2015 for that). At last look, the Mags were selling at over $5,000 a pair… and that’s the low end! You can see more about the shoes in the video here:

Yesterday was the start of the 10 day sale where each day Nike will be auctioning off 150 pairs of the 2011 Nike Mags. All net proceeds from the sale will go to benefit the Michael J. Fox foundation for Parkinson Research. In addition, the donation of the sneakers sales will be doubled as Nike is also taking advantage of a matching grant offered by Google founder Sergy Brin and his wife, Anne Wojcicki, who will match all donations to the Michael J. Fox Foundation up to $50 million through the end of 2012.

“The project is exciting to me because it brings together three very passionate audiences: the Parkinson’s community, sneakerheads, and ‘Back to the Future’ fans,” Michael J. Fox said in a statement. “With their support we can accelerate our objective of finding a cure for Parkinson’s.”

To help promote the shoe auction, Nike has created a parody video that includes original cast members Christopher Lloyd (Doc Brown) and Donald Fullilove (Goldie Wilson III), along with basketball star Kevin Durant and Nike designer Tinker Hatfiled which you can watch below.

The auction ends on Sept. 18. If you happen to be able to win one, let us know what you think about the Nike Mags! As for me, I’ll just sit and wait in Cafe 80’s until the hoverboard comes around.
