Disney’s ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides’ easily buried the competition to place first at the box office with $90.1 million. But the real story with ‘Pirates’ is its’ international appeal. The films international box office this past weekend took in more than $256 million…meaning 75% of its worldwide box office came from outside North America. With “The Curse of the Black Pearl” that split was roughly 50/50, but as the sequel films have been released the international side’s popularity has continued to grow. Even with a $90.1 million domestic box office take, the new film’s North American opening has been considered “soft” by industry experts.

Marvel/Disney’s ‘Thor’ placed third and took in an additional $15.4 million to bring its domestic box office total to $145 million and its total worldwide box office to $392 million.

Screen Gems ‘Priest’ took in $4.7 million to place 5th at the box office. The $60 million budgeted film has grossed $61 million worldwide so far.
