Battlestar Galactica is exploring a brand new frontier – your browser.  Bigpoint, the global market leader in browser-based massively multiplayer online games, recently released the official trailer for the new Battlestar Galactica Online game currently under-development.  The trailer shows the intricate details and graphics along with fast-paced action. You’ll also hear the official musical score by Bear McCreary from the series.

The trailer highlights the adventures of space combat while showing never-before-seen footage of Battlestar Galactica, Cylon Basestars, Raiders, Vipers, and fleet formations.  When this game finally launches in the United States this year, it will be available exclusively on Syfy.com for 30 days.

The fact that this game is brower-based has caused some concern.   A number of loyal Battlestar Galactica fans feel as though the game should have received the full MMO-treatment.  However, those who were able to catch a first glimpse of the game are no longer feeling discontentment.  “On one hand, we feel like BSG should be getting the full MMO treatment, but on the other, what we saw today was surprisingly impressive,” said Nick Kolan of IGN.

The only thing players will need to play the game is the Unity Plug-in and it will work with any browser.  Microtransactions will be a part of the game, but it is understood that there will be a good balance between the free and paying players.

Player vs. Player (PvP) action will be a huge part of the game.  When a new player signs up and starts game play, he or she is asked to choose their faction:  Cylon or Human.   Once that occurs the player is then thrust right into the battle between the two forces where an attack can happen at virtually any moment.

In the game, humans and Cylons continue their constant struggle to control the universe.  Bigpoint is assuring that a strong blend of tactical space combat, exploration, and mission-based gameplay will provide an interesting and diverse playing experience.  Scenes from the television production are going to be integrated into the game in order to help deliver an authentic experience for the player.  With stunning graphics and ground-breaking gameplay, Battlestar Galactica Online is attempting to set a new standard for browser-based MMOGs. The game is being developed by Artplant  ( http://artplant.no ), a Norwegian studio that specializes in MMOG design.

Battlestar Galactica Online is due for release sometime during 2011.  Visit battlestar-galactica.bigpoint.com for more information.
