The Syfy Channel has recently announced some of its new and returning series for 2011.

The new series includes the January 17 premiere of a US version of the British drama ‘Being Human’, the recently green-lit one-hour drama series ‘Alphas’ and the much-anticipated Battlestar prequel pilot movie, ‘Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome’.

Returning series includes ‘Warehouse 13′, ‘Eureka’ and ‘Haven’.

They should rename the channel to FantasyFy

SyFy cuts Stargate Universe but keeps Warehouse 13 and Eureka?

I am finding less and less of a reason to dial up the channel.

I’ve been hating on “SyFy” since 2005, when one of their executives indicated as a reason not to air the new Doctor Who series that it was “Too British”. The executives at “SyFy” think all fans of speculative fiction are 30 year old man-boys living in their parents basement with an average IQ of 90.

Even the name “SyFy” shows their complete contempt for their so-called “target audience”.

For almost two decades, SyFy has been home to horrible monster of the week films, original series that are nothing short of insulting (The Dresden Files still makes me shudder, never mind the atrocity that was Flash Gordon), bad fantasy, and a continuous display of contempt for the science fiction community. Even when they get it right (Farscape, Battlestar), they treat the properties like s#!t.

I can’t help but think it’s long past time that we of the speculative fiction fan community treat SyFy with the contempt they clearly hold for us.

I agree with most, but the Dresden files actually turned me on to the book series which is pretty darned good, even if the writer and his “followers” are a bit campy.

I can dig that. I read the books first, though – well, the first few, anyway… and what they did to the books in that series was unforgivable. I mean – his Staff was a hockey stick? Really? In my opinion, it’s worse than what they did to Earthsea and Flash Gordon. And Jules Vern… and basically everything they’ve done that wasn’t Battlestar, Farscape, or SG (I personally don’t care for SG, but at least it isn’t insulting).

I’m sorry if I sound fanatical – I’m just sick of being insulted. I mean, SyFy plays the WWE, for goodness sake. I get the “fiction” part, but where’s the science?

No arguing with ya there. I’ve sort of reserved myself to knowing most shows I like will get canceled. The only thing they have left that I actually enjoy is Eureka. Warehouse 13 isn’t bad, but not for me.

All networks have to pay attention to their fans or they pay in the ratings. Eventually Syfy will have to listen to the fans.

agreed, it would be really nice if they started doing this sooner than
      later..

They’ve been on a steady move away from Science Fiction fans pretty much since they started. So, no – they don’t have to listen to the fans. They have nothing but contempt for science fiction fans, and have all but come out and said so.

Why did they cut Stargate Universe. I watched it on Hulu every Wednesday! It’s better than anything else SyFy is offering. well, minus BSG and Caprica(which i still say should have been a Mini-series, not a full one)

  • Dlaureys

Since when is Wresling Science Fiction? SciFi Chanel has become a big joke, should be called the idiot channel.

  • Redbabette

Why couldn’t they just continue with Caprica??????????

  • Michael_hudspeth

The Syfy channel has been growing away from what the fans like for many years. Why? Because they seem to prefer formulas that have worked elsewhere. Good science fiction is not what they want. The powers in charge aren’t science fiction fans, they are executives. They care about money. “Wrestling makes a lot of money on other networks, why not on Syfy?” Maybe they should rename themselves the Network for Bean Counters (NBC) or maybe Bean Counter Channel (BCC). Would they get sued? Bring back Stargate. Star Trek. How about original series that are science fiction? Why not have a show that would feature fan fiction? If they’re looking for original content, go talk to the fans. I hear they’re a pretty intelligent bunch.

I wholeheartedly agree When I first saw wrestling on syfy I was like WTF!!? Thought it was syfy channel for a reason. I tune in to see new sci-fi genres or at the very least sci-fi reruns. If they wanna program wrestling don’t call it syfy…
